A World With Friends
About the Project
As a child with epilepsy, Lewis Hine knows firsthand the isolation experienced by children living with chronic conditions. After receiving a shunt three years ago, he decided to address one of most debilitating aspects of living with a chronic condition — loneliness. To help alleviate loneliness in kids like him, Lewis decided he would find a way to bring together as many children as possible to have fun. To reach that goal, Lewis founded A World With Friends (AWWF), a nonprofit that connects children with chronic conditions and allows them opportunity to make friends, have fun and combat loneliness.
AWWF arranges a variety of events for children to experience together, such as holiday parties, ski events and proms. During the pandemic, AWWF and its volunteers continued outreach efforts by delivering care packages to those living with chronic conditions who have been confined to their homes even more than usual. AWWF has been receiving letters from people all over the world eager to help — those letters are being added to care packages delivered to young people living with chronic conditions across the UK and the United States, a seemingly small gesture that can change someone’s life.
